Communicating in a Counter-Insurgency: Canadian Military Public Affairs in Afghanistan
The distinct challenges of Communicating in a Counter-Insurgency will be discussed on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 when Lieutenant-Colonel Jay Janzen, Director of Army Public Affairs, shares his experience as a veteran of two tours in Afghanistan.
Preparing and conveying messages to vastly different audiences is a challenge in our everyday communications. Imagine that these groups include high illiteracy in a dramatically different culture and those who would kill you. And, with international, embedded and local media all interconnected, sending the right message to the right audience becomes an even greater challenge.
Lieutenant Colonel Janzen is currently the Director of Army Public Affairs in Ottawa. Since his first position with Public Affairs, Lt.-Col. Janzen’s career has seen him in all areas of Canada. From the Atlantic Area Headquarters to the Prairies & Northern Canada, Lt.-Col. Janzen’s experience goes beyond Canadian borders to include two deployments to Afghanistan. He returned from Afghanistan in February 2009 marking two decades since joining the Canadian Forces.
